Yesterday turned into one of those days I’ll never forget. Our car broke down two hours from home, right on a busy highway, with three kids and a hungry newborn in the back. It was stressful and scary, and I didn’t want to take the baby out of his seat because of how close the cars were speeding by. We called AAA and waited, but then an Alabama State Trooper pulled up, and that’s when everything changed.
I thought he’d just manage traffic or check on us, but this man went above and beyond. He gently helped load all of us into his vehicle and drove us to a nearby rest stop where it was safe. He stayed with our car while we waited for the tow truck, making sure we were okay the entire time.
When my daughter Madeline was nervous about using the bathroom, he even went inside first to make sure there were no “boogiemans.” He joked with the kids, pretending to shoot helicopters out of the sky, and kept them smiling while I made phone calls.
When our baby Major started crying, this trooper didn’t hesitate for a second. He picked him up, fed him, and even burped him like a natural. When Major had a little accident, the trooper just laughed and kept going, completely unfazed.
He helped carry all our bags, drove us to the nearest hotel, and even carried everything inside for us. Since it was late and everything was closed, he made sure we were settled and knew where to go in the morning for a rental car. Before leaving, he gave our girls a warm hug and told us to call him if we needed anything.
That right there is genuine kindness.
