Touching moment pictured as surgeon calms down a scared two-year-old girl before she undergoes heart surgery, by playing her cartoons on his phone.

Two-year-old Xin Er was about to have major heart surgery at Zhejiang University Hospital in China. Already living with a heart condition, she was terrified as the medical team prepared her for the operation. Unable to stop crying, she clung to her fear in the unfamiliar and intimidating surroundings.

That’s when Dr. Shi Zhuo, Deputy Director of Cardiac Surgery, stepped in. Seeing how distressed Xin Er was, he picked her up and comforted her, showing cartoons on his phone to calm her down. The scene was captured by anaesthetist Jin Ziying, and the photos have since been shared widely, touching people around the world.

Dr. Shi later explained that it’s completely normal for children to be scared before surgery, and as parents themselves, he and his team understand both the children’s fear and the anxiety families feel. Thanks to their compassion, Xin Er was able to relax, and her operation went ahead as planned. She is now said to have recovered well.

It’s a simple moment, but one that highlights the human side of the medical profession. The world’s medical personal deserve so much of our respect. ❤️
