Tonight, my daughters and I made a stop at El Sombrero on our drive home. As we approached the entrance, we noticed a large group of young men ahead of us—around fifteen to twenty teenagers wearing Brandon Football Athletic gear.
What happened next caught me by surprise in the best way possible. One of them held the door open for us, and as we stepped inside, three others who had been sitting on the waiting bench immediately stood up to offer us their seats. We were called to our table right away, but that simple gesture of respect truly touched me. In today’s world, such courtesy feels increasingly rare.
By coincidence, they were seated near us in the dining room. I’ll admit I’m a bit of a people watcher, so I found myself observing their group. When their food arrived, something remarkable happened: every single one of those young men paused, bowed their heads, and those wearing hats removed them. Together, they prayed.
This moment moved me even more than their earlier kindness. These weren’t young boys being supervised by parents, coaches, or girlfriends. There were no adults around to prompt their behavior. They chose to act with respect and gratitude entirely on their own—because that’s who they are.
I don’t know these young men or their families, but if I did, I would personally thank their parents for raising such fine individuals. In a world that often feels heavy with negativity, witnessing this restored something in me. It made my heart smile and reminded me that there’s genuine hope for the future in the character of young people like these.
