Four years ago, my father kicked me out. Tonight, I’m walking into his father’s 75th birthday party, and I can feel their eyes on me, waiting for the drama.
It all started with a missing watch. I was 17.
“It was her, I’m sure of it,” my stepmom told my dad, her voice full of certainty. “I saw her lurking near your office. She’s been acting so strangely since that cat di:ed.”
“She has!” my stepsister chimed in. “She’s so emotional and desperate for attention. She probably pawned it already.”
The “desperation” they were talking about was me crying at dinner because my cat had just passed away. My dad didn’t believe me. He only believed them.
“After everything I do for you, you steal from me?” he roared. “You’re just like your mother. Pack your things. Get out.”
He threw me out that night. For four years, not a call, not a text. Only my grandpa was there for me, helping and believing in me.
A few weeks ago, my grandpa was turning 75. Despite everything, I was invited to his birthday party. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to go, but Grandpa and I had always been close. He was there for me when my dad kicked me out, helping me out financially since he lived in a retirement home and couldn’t offer me a place to stay. He was my best friend. I knew I couldn’t miss such a big milestone.
When I walked into the party, I immediately felt the old tension return…
