Meet Satchel. He’s the only staff member at the Homewood Suites hotel in Beaumont right now. The road leading in is underwater, and I-10 is closed because of flooding. No one can get in or out. Another hotel just a mile away is completely underwater. Satchel stayed through it all, even overnight, because his coworkers couldn’t make it to work.

He’s been here answering the phones, helping guests, making sure we all have hot coffee or tea, and even helping serve a hot breakfast. Through it all, he’s been kind, calm, and had a big smile on his face.

Sometimes we wonder why hard things happen, but maybe it’s so we can see love in action. I’ve seen people stepping up—like a big-hearted man washing dishes and making eggs, a sweet older lady cleaning tables, and a man soaked from head to toe after walking across I-10 to bring water to stranded truck drivers. We even saw a helicopter land at the hotel next door to help someone get out safely, as their parking lot is flooded.

As I sit here with my leftover bagel, a warm cup of tea, cozy socks, and dry shoes, I feel so thankful. Most of all, I’m thankful that my family is safe. Please keep us in your prayers as we hope to make it home soon to our loved ones.

And if you know Satchel, please let him know he’s our hero. He said I could share his photo. What a great example of staying strong and kind during tough times. I’ll definitely stay at this hotel again—because no matter what happens, I know there’s someone here who truly cares. Thank you, Satchel, for everything you’ve done for us. 😊
