I told him I wish I had been the cop who met George Floyd, because I know he’d still be alive. I told him not all officers are the same, that there are good ones trying to make a difference. But more importantly, I said, “Right now, none of that matters. I’m here to hear you.”
Later that day, Calvin sent me a message: “I believe things happen for a reason. We should meet again.”
I believed him. That day, I didn’t defend—I listened. And because of it, I gained something rare: a true connection. A friend.
