“Dear teenage boy at the skate park,

You’re probably around 15 years old, and honestly, I wasn’t expecting much maturity or kindness when we showed up. I certainly didn’t expect you to welcome my little girl onto your ramp.

See, my daughter has been begging to learn skateboarding for months. I even had to convince her it wasn’t just a ‘boys’ sport.’ So when we arrived and saw the park filled with teen boys smoking and swearing, both of us wanted to leave. But I didn’t want her to feel like she didn’t belong there.

When she said, ‘Mom, it’s full of older boys,’ I told her, ‘So what? They don’t own this skate park.’

She nervously gave it a try, making a few cautious runs down the ramp as you and your friends zipped by. Then you came over, and I honestly braced myself for the worst. But instead, you smiled and said, ‘Your feet are wrong. Can I help you?’

You spent nearly an hour patiently teaching her how to balance, how to steer, and even helped her up when she fell. You warned her to stay clear of the rails so she wouldn’t get hurt. And she listened-more than she ever listens to me!

Even though your friends teased you, you didn’t care. You chose kindness.

I want you to know how proud I am to have someone like you in our community. You gave my daughter confidence, pride, and the belief that she can do anything. Thank you for that.”
