Pancake, a former stray dog, has become a cherished presence at Boon Lott’s Elephant Sanctuary (BLES) in Thailand over the past three years. Katherine Connor, the founder and CEO of BLES, lovingly refers to Pancake as her “shadow” since a supporter brought the dog to the sanctuary.
Deep Bonds Formed Among Rescued Animals
BLES is renowned for rescuing elderly elephants who can no longer work, and the sanctuary’s animals are accustomed to the comings and goings of various residents.
A touching moment from a few years ago involved Sao Noi, an elderly elephant who passed away while being comforted by Boon Thong, another elephant, who gently caressed Sao Noi with her trunk.
Having thrived at the sanctuary, Pancake had developed a deep bond with the other rescued animals.
A Heartfelt Vigil for Boon Thong
Recently, Boon Thong faced her end of life. Observing her distress, Pancake immediately moved to her side.
Along with Connor, Pancake spent hours with Boon Thong, reflecting on her life and offering a heartfelt farewell. Connor and Pancake remained with Boon Thong for nine hours as she passed away, demonstrating Pancake’s steadfast compassion by staying by Boon Thong’s side until her final moments.
Celebrating a Life of Hard-Won Freedom
Boon Thong, who was in her 60s, had spent the last five years at BLES after being rescued from a riding camp.
For nearly 30 years, she had carried tourists, an experience that had almost broken her spirit. At the sanctuary, she finally experienced freedom, independence, and the opportunity to express herself.
Boon Thong was laid to rest at the sanctuary, surrounded by fruit and flowers, near her old friends, including Sao Noi.
