Phoenix policewoman, 29, is left with a broken ankle and nose after a ‘suspicious’ man punched her in the face outside a busy store – suspect, 51, held on $100,000 bond

-Officer was responding to 911 call about a man ‘scaring patrons’ on Friday afternoon

-Joseph Huggins, 51, allegedly struck her as she tried to question him

-Brave by-standers phoned police and pointed officers toward fleeing suspect

-Victim taken to hospital in serious condition; now recuperating at home

-A routine call turned violent in south Phoenix on Friday when a veteran policewoman was floored by a single punch that left her with a broken ankle and a broken nose.

The unnamed officer, 29, rushed to a business near 19th and Southern Avenues at about 1.15 p.m. after frantic staff reported a “suspicious” man loitering outside and frightening customers.

But the moment she approached Joseph Huggins, 51, he allegedly lashed out – smashing his fist into her face and sending her crashing to the ground, police revealed.

Stunned witnesses dialed 911 again while others trailed the suspect as he bolted from the scene. Quick-thinking officers followed their directions and cornered Huggins minutes later. He was handcuffed without further drama and now faces charges of aggravated assault and disorderly conduct. A judge set his bond at $100,000.

Paramedics rushed the injured officer to hospital in serious condition. Doctors confirmed she had suffered a fractured ankle during the fall as well as a broken nose. By Saturday she was released to continue her recovery at home, and colleagues say they expect her to make a full comeback.

Phoenix Police hailed the public’s help in nabbing the suspect, adding that the investigation remains active.
