This morning, the whole world paused.
Do you know why? Because an 8-year-old’s heart tank was empty.
The boys were already at their desks, starting school, and I was getting ready to leave for work when I noticed my littlest standing in the bathroom, quietly wiping his face.
I paused at the door and asked if he was okay. He looked up, tears silently rolling down his cheeks, and shook his head. When I asked if something happened, again he shook his head.
So I sat on the side of the tub and pulled him onto my lap. I told him sometimes our hearts feel empty and need a little refilling.
He cried into my chest and I held him tight. I asked if he could feel my love filling him up.
A nod. His tears stopped for a moment.
I waited a minute. Then I asked, “Has it reached your toes yet?”
He shook his head no.
“Okay man. We’ll take as long as you need. Work doesn’t matter right now. School doesn’t matter. This right here is the most important thing today. Filling you back to the top. Is that good?”
A nod. One more minute of quiet, holding him.
“Is your heart full of Mama’s love now?”
“Yeah.”
I looked into his eyes. I could see it shining there. Full to the top. And he was smiling.
Friends, you may not be eight. You may be twenty-eight, thirty-eight, or sixty-eight. But we all run on empty sometimes, just like he did. His little soul had been full and busy all weekend, and now it just needed refilling.
We all do. Pause. Take a moment. Refill your heart with the good things: scripture, prayer, sunshine, music, laughter, friends, hugs. If we don’t, those empty feelings overflow—tears, anger, snapping at the ones we love.
Take a moment today. Refill. It is the most important part of your day.
