Lucy surprised me one night by asking if it was normal for her “nipples to be sore.” Instantly, I knew puberty was close. Then she looked at her dad—sitting right beside me—and said she needed bras. I laughed to myself, thinking, I’m literally the one with breasts! Soon after, we headed to Target, and I told my sons we’d be shopping for some plain bras. They couldn’t believe it. “What are bras even for? She looks the same! Does this mean she’s starting puberty?” But just by including them, the awkwardness disappeared before it could even begin.
