At Thanksgiving dinner, my son’s wife slammed her hand on the table: “Your free ride is over! Pay $2,300 rent or get out of my house!” The room went silent as every relative stared at me. I rose slowly, set down my fork, and spoke five quiet words… words that drained the color from her face in front of everyone.
“Your free ride is over, Dolores. Starting next month, that guest room costs $2,300.”
For a moment, the Thanksgiving table went silent. Forks froze mid-air, the smell of turkey suddenly turned bitter. I stared at my daughter-in-law across the table, waiting for her to laugh, to say it was a joke. She didn’t.
“You heard me,” Brittany continued, her lipstick-perfect smile slicing like a knife. “Frankly, that’s below market value. I’m being generous.”
My son Michael kept his head down, eyes glued to his mashed potatoes. He didn’t defend me. He didn’t even look at me.
“This is my house,” I whispered. “Harold and I bought it in ’85. We raised three children here.”
Brittany rolled her eyes. “Correction. It was your house. We pay the bills now. Our rules. If you can’t afford rent, there’s always the downtown shelter. They love taking in seniors like you.”
Gasps rippled down the table. My sister-in-law June whispered, “Brittany, that’s cruel.”
“Cruel?” Brittany snapped. “What’s cruel is freeloading off your children. I’ve drafted a rental agreement—$2,300 for room, bathroom, and kitchen privileges.”
Privileges. The word burned. I pushed back my chair, hands trembling. “Excuse me.”
“Sit down, Mother,” Brittany ordered. “We’re not finished.”
But I was finished. Finished being humiliated, finished being erased.
Later that night, I pulled out Harold’s old lockbox, the one he’d made me promise to keep. Inside was the deed. My name, and only my name, written in black ink. A note in Harold’s handwriting rested on top: “Dolly, this is yours, always. Don’t let anyone take it from you.”
Brittany thought she could evict me. What she didn’t know was that I had every w/eapon I needed, ready to turn her smug little world upside down.
And come December 1st, when she came knocking with movers to throw me out, I was the one waiting… with the documents that would make her face crumble in front of everyone.
