Recently, a friend of my son’s—who’s been spending a lot of time at our house—referred to him as ‘Rich Boy.’ My son didn’t react at first, but that evening, as we were settling in for bed, he finally spoke. ‘Mommy, why was Charlie calling me Rich Boy?’ My heart tightened, and tears threatened to spill as I curled my toes to keep them from falling.
