Surgeon Dr. Oguz Basut displayed incredible selflessness during a critical surgery. While operating on a young woman with a salivary gland tumor, he suddenly felt ill. The cause was food poisoning from the previous day, which caused his blood pressure to plummet.
Instead of stopping the surgery, Dr. Basut made a courageous choice. He asked his team to insert an IV line into his right foot so he could stabilize himself and continue the operation while sitting. He was driven by the critical nature of the case—the tumor was near a vital facial nerve, and any delay or error could have caused permanent damage to the patient.
With the IV helping to regulate his blood pressure, he quickly recovered and continued the delicate procedure. Because of his determination, the surgery was completed successfully, and the patient’s health was preserved.
Dr. Basut later stated, “I couldn’t abandon the surgery.” His bravery, professionalism, and dedication demonstrate the incredible sacrifices doctors make to save lives.
