Louisa McKinney was at Dollar Tree picking up some wrapping paper for birthday gifts when she noticed an elderly man asking a young woman for help. He told her he needed help picking out a special birthday card. They walked over to the card aisle, and the woman did all the bending and reaching for him.

The woman asked who the card was for, so she could pick the right one. The man replied, “It’s for me. If I wake up tomorrow, I’ll be 85. My wife wanted to get me something, but she’s very sick and can’t leave the house, and I want her to know I got a birthday card from her.”

Louisa then overheard the man telling the woman about himself and his wife. They met when they were kids and got married as teenagers. He went off to war, and his wife worried about him constantly. When he came back, she was there for him, and they raised children together, growing their love even more.

The small act of kindness from the woman helping him choose a card was touching. It was also kind of the man to want to make his wife happy by getting the card. Louisa heard one more thing as she listened: the woman who helped him owned a restaurant, and she promised him that when his wife was able to leave the house, dinner would be on her.
