A Texas-based startup, Hiro Technologies, has developed MycoDigestible Diapers. That is an eco-friendly diaper that breaks down in landfills using plastic-eating fungi.
+
Co-founder Miki Agrawal, developed the technology after learning about fungi that can consume plastic. The inspiration came while reading a climate-focused children’s book to her son Hiro.
+
The diaper’s “SuperHiro Fungi” activates when discarded, breaking down soft plastics in less than a week instead of the typical 500 years.
+
Hiro Technologies has raised $54,000 through crowdfunding and won the 2024 Hygienix Innovation Award.
+
The company is now working with waste facilities to implement their fungi technology more broadly, aiming to create solutions for other plastic waste at scale.
