The Heart of Krugersdorp: How One Family Refuses to Give Up on Their Big Cats

A Tiger’s Home in Krugersdorp

In Krugersdorp, South Africa, a tiger now enjoys a spacious enclosure that once belonged to the luxurious Jugomaro Predator Park—a sanctuary once run with passion and dedication by Rosa Fernandes and her children, Justin and Maxine.

Seven Years of Care and Connection

For seven years, the park served as a haven for their pet tigers and lions. The Fernandes family shared a deep emotional connection with their animals. Justin, especially, fed one of the lions by hand and viewed these majestic creatures as cherished family members.

The Cost of Commitment

Maintaining the sanctuary was financially demanding, costing around $800 (or £600) each week, yet Justin remained steadfast.
“I see the cats as a big part of my family. These animals mean so much to me that I put my life on the line for them,” he explains.

A Heartbreaking Loss

In 2015, financial struggles forced the demolition of the park, leaving the family devastated and their beloved animals without a proper home. The Fernandes family moved into a trailer in Krugersdorp, but their dedication to their big cats never faltered.

Living Simply, Loving Deeply

Despite cramped living conditions, they continued to provide care and attention to their animals. Justin’s interactions remained incredibly close—from hand-feeding lions to playing games like football with the tigers.
His devotion is unwavering, even in the face of danger and a few close calls.
“I’d rather be killed by one of my cats than be in town and get murdered for 50 rand and my cell phone,” he says boldly.

A Journey That Began With Panjo

Their extraordinary journey began unexpectedly in 2008 when they rescued their first tiger, Panjo. Over time, their affection grew, leading them to care for more tigers and lions as if they were their own children.

A Mission to Rebuild Their Sanctuary

Through every hardship, the Fernandes family remains resolute. “We’d rather have nothing and have our cats,” Rosa emphasizes. Their goal is simple yet profound: to rebuild a proper sanctuary where their big cats can live safely, comfortably, and with the love they’ve always known.

A Testament to Love and Dedication

The story of the Fernandes family is a powerful reminder of the extraordinary bonds that can form between humans and animals. Their resilience and unwavering commitment reflect a devotion that transcends hardship, driven by love, loyalty, and an unbreakable sense of responsibility.
