Ambrealle Brown, 34, had to put her nursing dreams on hold when she was diagnosed with a rare kidney disease in 2016. Her condition worsened until she needed either dialysis or a transplant to survive.

Nija Butler, 48, Ambrealle’s mother, secretly got tested as a donor despite previous indications she might not be a match. It turned out that she was a match. In March 2023, they underwent surgery at Tulane University School of Medicine, where doctors performed Louisiana’s first robotic kidney transplant.

After the successful surgery, both women pursued nursing education together. This April, the mother-daughter duo graduated from Baton Rouge General School of Nursing side by side.

Ambrealle has accepted a position at a burns intensive care unit, while Nija continues her career at a psychiatric facility.
