Caitlin Explains What a Real Partnership Looks Like

“I have a husband who helps, but that doesn’t mean I’m ‘so lucky to have found a man like that.’

Yes, I feel lucky to have him, but not just because he does what a good father and husband should do.

When I tell people I’m going away for a weekend with friends, or that he’s cooking dinner, or that he took the kids shopping without me, or cleaned and did laundry, they look shocked—like I’ve told them something unbelievable. Then I hear, ‘Wow, you’re so lucky! I wish I had someone like that.’

But here’s the truth: we’re a team. I do things for him, and he does things for me. We take turns caring for the kids so we both get breaks.

Being in a relationship—especially with kids—takes a lot of effort from both people.

When he gets home from work, he plays with the kids so I can make dinner. Then I play with the kids while he cleans up the kitchen. I cook dinner on weekdays, and he makes breakfast on the weekends.

We support each other. We share the work at home and with the kids. That’s how it should be.

I’m not lucky just because he does what dads are supposed to do. I’m lucky because of who he is—and because of how I feel when I’m with him.”
