I was looking for a small, playful puppy with a lively face. At the shelter, a volunteer guided me through the noisy kennels until she showed me Gerda, a thirteen-year-old blind dog. She was curled up in the back of her kennel, having been abandoned by her family, almost motionless from her despair. Without hesitation, my heart decided: I would take her.

The first few days were difficult, she hardly ate and hardly got up. I stayed close to her, whispering that she was at home, that I was there. Then, little by little, little miracles began to happen: she went to her food bowl by herself and put her head on my lap.

A mischievous puppy arrived, Max, who became her eyes, her guide, her faithful shadow. A year later, Gerda became the heart of our home, and I realised that sometimes you don’t get what you want, but what you really need. ❤️
